As I think back on the seven-and-a-half years I spent at Washington University, my mind is filled with memories, happy, sad, frustrating, and even humorous.

Tonight I would like to share with you some of the memories that I take with me as I leave Washington University.

I take with me the memory of my office on the fourth floor of Lopata Hall - the room at the end of the hallway that was too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and always too far away from the women's restroom. The window was my office's best feature. Were it not for the physics building across the way, it would have afforded me a clear view of the arch. But instead I got a view of the roof of the physics building. I also had a view of one corner of the roof of Urbauer Hall, which seemed to be a favorite perch for various species of birds who alternately won perching rights for several weeks at a time. And I had a nice view of the physics courtyard, noteworthy as a good place for watching people run their dogs. It's amazing how fascinating these views became the longer I worked on my dissertation. But my favorite view was of a nearby oak tree. From my fourth-floor vantage point I had a rather intimate view of the tree and the various birds and squirrels that inhabit it. Occasionally a bird would land on my window sill, which usually had the effect of startling both of us.

I take with me the memory of two young professors who passed away while I was a graduate student. Anne Johnstone, the only female professor from whom I took a course in the engineering school, and Bob Durr, a political science professor and a member of my dissertation committee, both lost brave battles with cancer. I remember them fondly.

I take with me the memory of failing the first exam in one of the first engineering courses I took as an undergraduate. I remember thinking the course was just too hard for me and that I would never be able to pass it. So I went to talk to the professor, ready to drop the class. And he told me not to give up, he told me I could succeed in his class. For reasons that seemed completely ludicrous at the time, he said he had faith in me. And after that my grades in the class slowly improved, and I ended the semester with an A on the final exam. I remember how motivational it was to know that someone believed in me.

I take with me memories of the midwestern friendliness that so surprised me when I arrived in St. Louis 8 years ago. Since moving to New Jersey, I am sad to say, nobody has asked me where I went to high school.

I take with me the memory of the short-lived computer science graduate student social committee lunches. The idea was that groups of CS grad students were supposed to take turns cooking a monthly lunch. But after one grad student prepared a pot of chicken that poisoned almost the entire CS grad student population and one unlucky faculty member in one fell swoop, there wasn't much enthusiasm for having more lunches.

I take with me the memory of a more successful graduate student effort, the establishment of the Association of Graduate Engineering Students, known as AGES. Started by a handful of engineering graduate students because we needed a way to elect representatives to a campus-wide graduate student government, AGES soon grew into an organization that now sponsors a wide variety of activities and has been instrumental in addressing a number of engineering graduate student concerns.

I take with me the memory of an Engineering and Policy department that once had flourishing programs for full-time undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students.

I take with me memories of the 1992 U.S. Presidential debate. Eager to get involved in all the excitement I volunteered to help wherever needed. I remember spending several days in the makeshift debate HQ giving out-of-town reporters directions to the athletic complex. I remember being thrilled to get assigned the job of collecting film from the photographers in the debate hall during the debate. And I remember the disappointment of drawing the shortest straw among the student volunteers and being the one who had to take the film out of the debate hall and down to the dark room five minutes into the debate - with no chance to re-enter the debate hall after I left.

I take with me memories of university holidays which never seemed to apply to graduate students. I remember spending many a fall break and President's Day holiday with my fellow grad students in all day meetings brought to us by the computer science department.

I take with me memories of exams that seemed designed more to test endurance and perseverance than mastery of the subject matter. I managed to escape taking any classes that featured infamous 24-hour-take-home exams, but remember the suffering of my less fortunate colleagues. And what doctoral student could forget the pain and suffering one must endure to survive the qualifying exams?

I take with me the memory of the seven-minute rule, which always seemed to be an acceptable excuse for being ten minutes late for anything on campus, but which doesn't seem to apply anywhere else I go.

I take with me the memory of Friday afternoon ACM happy hours, known not for kegs of beer, but rather bowls of rainbow sherbet punch. Over the several years that I attended these happy hours they enjoyed varying degrees of popularity, often proportional to the quality and quantity of the accompanying refreshments - but there was always the rainbow sherbert punch.

I take with me memories of purple parking permits, the West Campus shuttle, checking my pendaflex, over-due library books, trying to print from cec, lunches on Delmar, friends who slept in their offices, miniature golf in Lopata Hall, The Greenway Talk, division III basketball, and trying to convince Dean Russel that yet another engineering school rule should be changed.

Finally, I would like to conclude, not with a memory, but with some advice. What would a graduation speech be without a little advice, right? Anyway, this advice comes in the form of a verse delivered to the 1977 graduating class of Lake Forest College by Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss - Here's how it goes:

My uncle ordered popovers

from the restaurant's bill of fare.

And when they were served,

he regarded them

with a penetrating stare . . .

Then he spoke great Words of Wisdom

as he sat there on that chair:

"To eat these things,"

said my uncle,

"you must excercise great care.

You may swallow down what's solid . . .

BUT . . .

you must spit out the air!"

And . . .

as you partake of the world's bill of fare,

that's darned good advice to follow.

Ladies and gentlemen, teachers, students:

Good morning! Today, I stand here to say goodbye to our alma mater on behalf of all the first three graduates, to say goodbye to the teachers in the third, to say goodbye to the students who get along with each other, and to say goodbye to the unforgettable years. Let us sincerely say to the teachers: Thank you, to the younger generation, the school girls say: hard!

At this moment, I feel very excited, that is, the joy of graduation, but also can not hide unlimited memories and nostalgia. Three years of learning time, a flick of a stroke, but many memories will become the most precious collection of our life: the luxuriant poplar, the wide playground, picturesque corridors, bright classrooms. We must remember the ambitions you and I set up when I entered the school. I must remember the figure of my diligent study and study in the classroom, the library and the laboratory. I must remember the joy of my heart when the teacher's inculcation and exercises got a breakthrough, and I must remember that you were the dragon in the sports field. There are too many scenes to live in. These three years of road, we walk hard and happy, three years of life, we have lived a full and beautiful, we flow through tears, but with laughter, we tread thorns, but smell the flowers.

Three years of junior high school life, so that we from a ignorant child, to become a full of teens; never dare to leave the arms of their parents, not afraid of danger, brave to fight. In the past three years, more than 1050 days and nights, my alma mater has been arming me with knowledge. Now, we not only learned the language, mathematics, but also learned physics and chemistry, not only to write the writing, but also to know the molecules and the atoms and all kinds of knowledge. The most important point is to make me more clearly know how to love China, love socialism and safeguard world peace. This is the result of school education, which is the crystallization of teachers' efforts.

On the occasion of this graduation, I am grateful to the beautiful alma mater, giving me the wisdom and strength of the knowledge, the power of wisdom and the truth of being a human being. Thank you for the teachings and selfless care of our beloved teachers, and your kindness to us is higher than the mountain, and it is deeper than the sea.

Today's graduation is not only a summing up of yesterday, but also a call for tomorrow. In the future we are going to go to high school to learn. They will also go to university for further education. They will carry guns to defend the border areas of the motherland. They will go up the mountain to look for mines. They will go to factories to complete their work and go to work in vast fields. We will also travel to all parts of the world to New York, Paris and London. But wherever we are, no matter what we do, we will always have a heart to heart. Teachers, please believe that we will keep the fine traditions of the third middle school students in the new places, to fight, to struggle, to create, and never to live up to your trust!

All of the students in the third class, although we have graduated, will continue to study and live here. I hope that you will work hard, unite and love, be civilized and obey the discipline in the future, not only to be a qualified middle school student, but also to work hard to be a useful man of the country.

Finally, we sincerely wish our dear alma mater and beloved teachers: always beautiful! Always young! Happy forever!

Dear teachers, dear classmates:

Hello everyone!

It is green grass again. When the peach and plum are fragrant, it is another year when the gardenia flowers bloom. In the sunny spring, our hearts are drizzling with drizzle. Because we are going to say goodbye to our teachers who have accompanied us for three years, say goodbye to our classmates who have been together, and say goodbye to this unforgettable time. Let us sincerely say to the teachers: Thank you, to the younger generation, the school girls say: hard!

Three years of learning time, a flick of a flick, but many memories will become the most precious collection of our life: straight poplar, wide playground, picturesque corridor, bright classroom. You must remember your ambition and ambition when you entered the school. You must remember the figure of my diligent learning in the classroom and the laboratory. You must remember the joy of my heart when the teacher's inculcation and the problem of breaking the problem. I must remember that in the sports field, you have a lot of exercise. Many scenes are worth remembering. These three years of road, we walk hard and happy, three years of life, we have lived a full and beautiful, we flow through tears, but with laughter, we tread thorns, but smell the flowers.

In the past three years, more than 1050 days and nights, our alma mater has been arming us with knowledge. Now, under the guidance of teacher Chen, we have learned how to write beautiful articles and how to understand the changes of the four seasons in the text. In the guidance of the teacher, we learned how to think about the problem with the mathematical mind and solve the questions with the knowledge of mathematics. "A, B, C, D" are our first acquaintance. The first lesson in English, and "Artislong, butlifeisshort" is one of the new philosophy of life we have learned from the teacher of the class teacher. We learned about the mystery of material composition around us, and learned how to build a strong body in life under the guidance of sports teacher Ma and Qiu. In the history of history Qi teacher's humorous classroom, we crossed the course of the world's development. Under the teachings of the political king, we understand China's policy and know how to be human. The rigorous and meticulous working attitude of Mr. Xia has brought us quiet and meticulous health cleaning, and the quiet classroom and self study classroom.

The teacher is an eternal song. We are the notes that you release. No matter which song we import, we beat her rhythm. Alma mater is a warm harbor. We are a small boat sailing out of her arms. No matter where we dock, there is a light in her eyes.

Hello everyone!

Time flies. In the twinkling of an eye, three years have passed. We must say goodbye to our dear teacher, and we must say goodbye to our classmates. No campus corner has left our footprints. Wherever we go, whatever we see, we can evoke a string of memories.

Thinking back three years ago, we came together with innocence and hope. We are energetic and enthusiastic, and we are full of vision and expectation for the future. In the past three years, we have been enjoying the intense and intense school life in the sweat and feeling the concern of the teacher. In the study, we are in the teacher's inculcate teaching gradually sensible, in the teacher's patient and meticulous teaching happy learning; in life, we are in the teacher's care under the care of the healthy growth, in the teacher's care to feel the warmth of the family. Thousands of words do not mean our friendship with teachers. We can not finish our lingering nostalgia for teachers. Three years of study and life, more than 1000 days and nights, a teacher and teacher to talk to the heart of the heart, there is a teacher's enthusiastic guidance, by the school leadership of the teachings in the busy schedule. There are encouragement, criticism, communication and guidance, all of which are the most precious wealth in our hearts.

The mid-term exam is, after all, the first most sacred test in our life, and its pressure can be imagined. You know, teacher, your affectionate gaze is our strongest dependence. I believe that all the sweat and ideals of hard work will be transformed into a good news report. We know that it is the best reward for your long selfless dedication.

Yes, we are full of confidence in this. Teacher, I feel your expectations, your eyes. Now I can still remember every smile you have, every time you talk, your every lesson is still fresh in our mind. Without recollection, everything is so vivid and very gratifying. Teacher, we really do not want to talk about leaving, we are deeply attached to you and * * campus.

We should follow the school style of civilization, enterprising, realistic and innovative. Under the encouragement of the school motto of Ming and Germany, the learning, the diligence and the seeking, we should study hard and innovate under the inspiring of learning good thinking, respecting teachers and keeping discipline, improving themselves and developing harmoniously.

We want to graduate from the alma mater and face the teachers and younger brothers and sisters, we hope that you will cherish the time, study hard and fight hard. Facing the beloved teachers, we wish you health, the smooth work, the peach and plum all over the world; in the face of the dear alma mater, we want to engrave you in the heart, no matter in the future. Wherever we go, we will be proud to say that we are alma mater.

Good afternoon!

It is my great honor to stand here today to say goodbye to my Alma mater, to say goodbye to my Alma mater, and to say goodbye to this unforgettable high school year. First of all, I would like to thank my teachers, parents and classmates for their trust in me.

Three years ago, at this time, we were yearning for this school outside the campus. Three years later, we were full of it. Three years ago, we entered the school with excellent grades and parents' expectations. Three years later, we are leaving the beautiful campus with growing experience and parents' comfort.

Standing in the three years after the end, we found that high school is a too hasty book, unconsciously, China with more than one thousand pages so rushed over, but it's more than one thousand days and nights into numerous real life details emerge in front of us, all the Chinese redbud, kapok blooming; The noisy playground, the quiet botanical garden; The sound of the morning, the hasty and full of evening, the love-hate and love-hate dining hall, the library that makes people forget to return; With my classmates' heart and soul, and the teacher's laughter... It is in the silent steps of time that we have changed from three years ago, to the mature and acute, from the confusion of three years ago, to today's steadfast courage! Choose to let us have no regrets, we would like to sincerely say: in the attachment, thank you!

When we will leave school, we might as well from the emotion in the territory to set aside a reason, ten years, twenty years or thirty years later, when the familiar faces and scenery gradually fade, when the class learned the chapter out of my mind, when we are on the stage of fuzzy failure, we rely on what to maintain the Alma mater of deep feelings? What is the common blood that flows through each of the attached people?

First of all, it is the spirit of hardship that is attached to us. "If you eat bitter, you will be a companion." We will not forget those eight days in the hot sun, the sonorous military training pace, unforgettable that week in the qingyuan township of the rice training "the three identical" of the agricultural test; We shall never forget the time when we were running around the playground with our tired legs and tired legs. I can't forget the summer night's scorching heat, the bitter cold in winter. It is these hardships that have chastened our plain character; It is these hardships that have cultivated our strong and unyielding spirit; Even more, let us understand the mission and responsibilities that are shouldering on the shoulders of contemporary youth, and let us understand the "first taste of sweet, sweet, sweet and sweet", which Yang told us. First eat big bitter, then eat small bitter, small bitter is also sweet!"

Second, it is the space that gives us freedom to think freely. If we are birds, we are the blue sky. If we are running water, it is high mountain. The attachment gives us the desire to fly high, and the attachment gives us the possibility to rush into the distance. In this area, we are free to form a community that can bring into play our individual character and talents. We make public our individuality in the election of the student union, and we display our wisdom in the innovation competition. On the other hand, very few homework assignments, a full week of self-study and body forging, and the seemingly strict but extremely loose management system. It is these freedoms that tell us that while we are focused on learning, we should develop more fully and highlight our strengths. It is these freedoms that tell us to learn to choose and to give up; It is also these freedoms that tell us to manage our own lives and plan our own lives.

Third, it is a pluralistic view of our cognitive world. Adhering to the principal wu "with complete modern education builds high quality of modern people" concept of education, the cultivation of the affiliated high school of respected multivariate quality, bring all kinds of talents to grow hair glory: there are an infinite number of elective courses, there are rich and colorful club activities, there are too many things to see the style of competition. In the school sports meet, we are splashing the sweat of youth; At the festival, we dance the young rhythm; In the science festival, we jump to innovative thinking. Cultivate the consciousness of our citizens, volunteers group wonderful "BBS of the affiliated high school of" broaden our horizons, there are rich and colorful summer camp every year and a wide variety of academic investigation activities, make we look around the world, with the world... Under the background of such respect and diversity, the soil in the attachment makes us a living individual, and we will embrace all advanced civilizations with the mind of the attached people.

Today, we stand on the new starting point of life, the road ahead is how to explore, but I know, the affiliated high school of people not afraid, because of the affiliated high school of three years of experience, let us gradually clear the way forward. Graduation from high school is both an end and a starting point. With the confidence and calmness characteristic of the attached, we will walk into the holy university hall and enter the society full of competition and challenge. We must be able to create a new splendor in the college entrance exam a week later. We must also be able to win one victory after another in the future.

i would like to say that all those who wait to have a library will not study further even though they have one and all these who wait to have a lab will not do experiments even though they have one. when you have a firm resolution and determination to solve a problem, you will naturally economize on food and clothing.

as for time, i should say it’s not a problem. you may know that every day he could do only an hour work, not much more than that because darwin was ill for all his life. you must have read his achievements. every day you spend an hour in reading 10 useful pages, then you will read more than 3650 pages every year. in 30 years you will have read 110,000 pages.

my fellow students, reading 110,000 pages will make you a scholar. but it will take you an hour to read three kinds of small-sized newspapers and it will take you an hour and a half to play four rounds of mahjian pieces. reading small-sized newspapers or playing mahjian pieces, or working hard to be a scholar? it’s up to you all.
